I love my online exercise classes! Both my yoga teacher and my barre/HIIT instructor teach from an “all the modifications, no judgment” perspective. And both are in curvier/larger bodies themselves which helps
So nice to hear that there are m ore and more people training others that do not follow the cultural idea of weight and over training and including usable modifications. Its so great!
Not everyone can afford a subscription, but I feel you on the benefits of working out solo. I like several youtubers for the same reasons you cite. Sydney Cummings Houdyshell is 100% my favorite, and 'Up to the BEat Fit' for walk/dance. For yoga, Kate Vantucci and Yoga with Adriene. All have beginner-friendly workout options, and like a personal trainer, lovingly encourage you to push to your best.
I have peloton for a slightly different reason- our gym in our very small town had closed, and now I have retired from teaching, so I dont have a key to the school gym anymore. Boo hoo.
Anyway, while I am enjoying the app as a whole, I find the lack of diverse body size really problematic at times.
I recently hired a personal trainer- virtually- and I just love her, she will literally work you through anything you want to accomplish. I had a few moves in the peloton yoga classes that were so hard for me, and I was making no progress- my trainer gave me things to work on to extend my range of motion, but then pointed out that some peoples actual anatomy made it impossible/very difficult for some folks to achieve certain things- for me that is a basic move my foot to between my hands in down dog. Seems I probably have something out of proportion to be able to do that basic thing. and honestly my belly gets in the way. And if you have done peloton yoga- you know those folks have no belly (except when pregnant) that gets in their way. I love the yoga part so I wish for this all the time.
I love peloton, so it isnt a deal breaker, but man it would be nice if they would do some significant inclusion hiring.
Also, yes to training without having to deal with actual people. Lol. I think that is why I like to workout online so much- all those things you said!
Yes, I agree on the body size diversity! And just body diversity in general -- I think some of the same reasons why Peloton works for introverts also make it useful for those who diverge from the usual cis, hetero, hyper-gendered, able-bodied world of gyms. It would be wonderful if Peloton were more inclusive of ALL kinds of bodies.
Love the story of your trainer -- thanks for sharing!
